Career Highlights

1979 Started his coaching career as an assistant coach in baseball and football at Mayfield High School

1981 Assistant Coach in helping lead the Mayfield High School Trojans to the New Mexico 4A State High School Baseball Championship

1983 Served as the public relations officer and assistant to legendary basketball coach Ron Black at New Mexico Junior College

1988 Birmingham’s college baseball head coaching career began when he was the head coach at NAIA school College of the  Southwest Mustangs, which was the second year in program’s existence.

1989 The Mustangs reached No. 23 in the NAIA national rankings, won 33 games and advanced to the regional finals before losing to Dallas Baptist.

1990 Became the first head baseball coach at New Mexico Junior College (NMJC)

1995 Western Junior College Althletic Conference (WJCAC) Coach of the Year

1997 (WJCAC) Coach of the Year

1998 (WJCAC) Coach of the Year

2002 (WJCAC) Coach of the Year

2005 Won the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division 1 National Baseball Championship

2005 Named NJCAA Division 1 National Coach of the Year; NJCAA Division I Region 5 Coach of the Year; (WJCAC) Coach of the Year

2006 (WJCAC) Coach of the Year

2007 Finished second in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division 1 National Baseball Championship

2007 Named NJCAA Division I Region 5 Coach of the Year; (WJCAC) Coach of the Year

2008 Became the new head baseball coach at the University of New Mexico, a Division 1 NCAA university

2008 Feb 2nd NMJC that the school held ceremonies to dedicate the newly renovated baseball field that now bears his name

2010 Coached the UNM Lobos baseball team to its first NCAA Baseball Tournament since 1962 (38-22 record)

2011 Inducted into the National Junior College Athletic Association Hall of Fame.

2011 Coached the UNM Lobos baseball team to the NCAA Baseball Tournament by winning Mountain West Conference tournament

2012 Inducted into the Lea County (N.M.) Hall of Fame

2012 Coached the UNM Lobos baseball team to the NCAA Baseball Tournament by winning Mountain West Conference tournament

2012 Named Mountain West Coach of the Year

2012 Inducted into the Lea County Athletic Hall of Fame

2013 April 6th Earned his 1000th win of his career when the Lobos defeated the Air Force Falcons 19–5

2013 Coached the UNM Lobos baseball team to the NCAA Baseball Tournament by winning Mountain West Conference tournament

2013 Named Mountain West Coach of the Year

2014 The hitting coach for the 2014 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team that won the Honkbal-Haarlem Baseball Week Tournament

2016 Inducted into the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame
