Steve Famiglietta was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1966 and moved to Rio Rancho, NM when he was 10. Immediately Steve got involved with youth soccer. Graduating from Cibola High School in 1984, Steve was a High School All American. Steve played for UNM and was offered a pro contract in Europe. Shortly before leaving for Europe Steve was involved in a car accident which left him unable to play. He rehabilitated and went on to play professionally for the Colorado Comets, the Albuquerque Gunners, the Amarillo Challengers and the NM Chilis which were all teams in the USL. Steve was two-time USL Defensive Player of the Year, and a three time US All-Star even touring the former Soviet Union as part of the USL All Star Team.
Famiglietta who is also known as “Fami” in the local soccer community was inducted in the USL Hall of Fame in 2006 as a President’s Selection. The city of Rio Rancho recognized Steve after his USL induction with an award in 2007.
He acted as a player/coach for the NM Banditos and has coached kids almost as long as he has played. Steve has been the technical director for the Albuquerque United Football Club (AUFC), where he has been for the last 5 years. He was named in 2018 as the new head coach for the New Mexico Runners.
He also spends time scouting for US Soccer. He was also inducted into the Cibola High School Sports Hall of Fame.
